Abstract: this paper discusses such a significant topic as the introduction of information and computer tools in the educational system. In this article the most used software tools of information technologies intended for introduction in educational process are considered and described. The influence of the Internet and distance learning on the educational process is also considered. The importance of introduction and use of information technologies in Russian society and Russian education is analyzed. It is revealed that information technologies in education allow to use a wider range of forms and methods of education and are one of the modern ways of intensification and optimization of the educational process. Currently, the role of information technology in people’s lives has increased significantly. Modern society has become involved in a common historical process called Informatization. This process includes access of any citizen to sources of information, penetration of information technologies in scientific, industrial, public spheres, high level of information service. The processes taking place in connection with the informatization of society contribute not only to the acceleration of scientific and technological progress, intellectualization of all types of human activity, but also to the creation of a qualitatively new information environment of society, ensuring the development of human creativity.
